About Pediatric Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation

The Section of Pediatric Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Ochsner Hospital for Children is dedicated to supporting the development of children with physical disabilities from birth to 18 years of age. The focus of pediatric rehabilitative care at Ochsner is to optimize the physical, cognitive and social function of our young patients to their highest possible level – with the ultimate goal being functional independence.

This is achieved through the development of comprehensive, family-centered, rehabilitation treatment plans tailored to the specific needs of each patient and their family. A multi-disciplinary team approach is taken in the development of each child’s comprehensive plan of care involving both the medical/rehabilitation team and the family. This is coordinated by the pediatric physiatrist and commonly includes one or more of the following additional specialty services as part of the child’s outpatient rehabilitation treatment plan:

  • Physical Therapy
  • Occupational Therapy
  • Speech Therapy
  • Orthopedic Surgery
  • Neurology
  • Neurosurgery
  • Genetics
  • Nutrition
  • Social Work
  • Neuropsychology
  • Home Health Service
